Timeline
Multi-year initiative
Overview

The objective wasn't simply to redesign a logo.
U.S. Patriot Tactical had grown into one of the largest military retailers in the country, but its customer experience had evolved organically over many years.
The brand existed across ecommerce, hundreds of retail locations, marketing campaigns, email, social media, print materials, and in-store merchandising—often with inconsistent visual standards and disconnected customer experiences.
The goal was to modernize the entire customer experience while creating a scalable creative system capable of supporting rapid business growth.
The Challenge

Military retail presents unique design problems that traditional ecommerce rarely encounters.
Customers often purchase products with strict uniform regulations, service-specific requirements, sizing standards, and government-approved specifications.
The existing digital experience contained thousands of products and complex customization paths that created friction throughout the shopping experience.
Internally, creative production also faced challenges:
+ Inconsistent branding across channels
+ Multiple visual languages
+ Manual creative production
+ Growing product catalog
+ Retail stores lacking unified merchandising standards
+ Marketing assets produced independently across teams
The opportunity became much larger than a visual refresh.
Objectives

It became an organizational redesign of how creative work was produced.
+ Modernize the U.S. Patriot brand
+ Create consistency across digital and physical retail
+ Simplify ecommerce navigation
+ Increase customer confidence during purchasing
+ Develop scalable design systems
+ Improve creative production workflows
+ Support future platform growth
Research

The redesign began by examining how service members actually shop.
Unlike traditional retail customers, military personnel often purchase:
+ Required uniform components
+ Regulation-compliant insignia
+ Branch-specific equipment
+ Deployment gear
+ Rank-dependent accessories
Purchasing decisions are frequently made under time constraints while balancing strict military regulations.
This meant reducing cognitive load became more important than adding visual complexity.
Design Strategy

Rather than treating branding and UX as separate initiatives, the project combined both into one unified system.
Brand Refresh
The visual identity evolved toward a cleaner, more modern appearance while maintaining the trust associated with military retail.
This included:
+ Updated typography
+ More consistent color usage
+ Simplified iconography
+ Improved product photography direction
+ Stronger hierarchy
+ More premium visual language
Digital Experience

The ecommerce experience was redesigned around clarity.
Key improvements included:
+ Updated typography
+ More consistent color usage
+ Simplified iconography
+ Improved product photography direction
+ Stronger hierarchy
+ More premium visual language
Special attention was given to products requiring extensive customization.
Rather than presenting customers with overwhelming forms, customization options were reorganized into guided experiences that reduced confusion while maintaining flexibility.

Design Systems

One of the largest long-term improvements came from introducing reusable design standards.
Instead of creating every campaign from scratch, repeatable systems were established for:
+ Landing pages
+ Email marketing
+ Promotional campaigns
+ Product launches
+ Category pages
+ Store signage
+ Social media
+ Seasonal promotions
This significantly reduced production time while improving consistency.

Retail Experience

The rebrand extended beyond ecommerce.
Creative standards were developed to support physical retail environments including:
+ Window graphics
+ Promotional displays
+ In-store signage
+ Point-of-sale materials
+ Category merchandising
+ Wayfinding Campaign consistency
The result was a shopping experience that felt unified regardless of whether customers interacted online or inside a retail location.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Aligning these teams around a shared creative vision became as important as the design work itself.
This initiative required close collaboration across numerous departments including:
+ Marketing
+ Ecommerce
+ Development
+ Merchandising
+ Product Management
+ Retail Operations
+ Executive Leadership
+ Vendors
+ Photography
+ Content
Business Impact

The redesign established a scalable creative foundation that supported significant company growth.
During this broader period of digital optimization, additional initiatives—including ecommerce improvements, marketing optimization, and conversion-focused experimentation—contributed to record-breaking business performance.
Highlights included:
+ More cohesive customer experience across digital and retail
+ Improved brand consistency
+ Faster creative production
+ Better scalability for future campaigns
+ Stronger merchandising presentation
+ Streamlined customer journeys
+ Foundation for continued ecommerce growth
Additional marketing optimization efforts—including A/B testing of paid media strategies—helped contribute to the company's strongest sales periods and supported continued organizational expansion.

Key Takeaways

The most successful aspect of this project wasn't a redesigned homepage or a refreshed logo. It was building a unified creative ecosystem.
By aligning branding, ecommerce, retail, marketing, and internal creative operations under a shared design system, the organization gained a more scalable foundation that improved customer experience while enabling faster execution across the business.
